Note that many Linux distributions already ship an RPM or DEB packaged versionof Hatari. You might want to have a look at those first, but often theyare not as up to date as the official version here.

Hatari also needs a TOS image file for running. But since TOS is stillcopyrighted, we can not put such an image file here (and please don't ask usto mail you any TOS images).However, if you have an original Atari ST, you can make an image file from itsTOS ROMs. There are programs like TOSDUMP.PRG or WINX that can create TOSimages on a real ST.Note that depending on the machine type that you want to emulate, you can onlyuse certain TOS versions. The plain ST mode only works with TOS 1.00, 1.02,1.04, or 2.06. STE mode requires any of the TOS versions 1.xx or 2.xx.TOS 3.0x is for TT, and TOS 4.0x is for Falcon mode.If you don't have any of the original TOS images, you can also try the freeEmuTOS TOS replacementsupporting all Atari machines. Most programs and games work fine withit (exceptions are unpatched i.e. TOS version dependent STOS games,and Falcon programs using either DSP or TrueColor mode). The officialrelease of Hatari is shipped with the latest EmuTOS image at itsrelease time.

Hatari is an Atari ST/STE/TT/Falcon system emulator that can be used as a libretro core. Hatari tries to emulate the hardware as close as possible so that it is able to run most of the old Atari games and demos.

TOS is the OS (Operating System) of the Atari ST range of PCs. This range incorporates the 520ST and 1040ST, their STF/M/FM and STE variants and the Mega ST/STE. Afterward, 32-bit machines were created utilizing another new version of TOS, called MultiTOS, which permitted performing various tasks. If you want to play Atari TOS 206-US video games on PC or any other device using Atari TOS 206-US Emulator, you need Atari TOS 206-US BIOS rom to run Atari TOS 206-US Emulator, you need to download Atari TOS 206-US BIOS rom files.

The Gemulator 2000 can be downloaded from our download page and comes in two ZIP files called GEM2000.ZIP and GEM2000X.ZIP. All users need to download and install GEM2000.ZIP or run our new unified setup program. Existing Gemulator users need not download GEM2000X.ZIP, which contains support files which you already have with your older Gemulator releases. As of February 2008, there is an excellent TOS alternative freely available as open source. The TOS clone "EmuTOS" is available for download from the EmuTOS web site. We recommend downloading EmuTOS release 0.8.3 or higher and using the 256K ROM image file, which is comparable to TOS 2.06. For English systems, the particular file is called ETOS256US.IMG, for French systems it is called ETOS256FR.IMG, as so forth. Copy the appropriate image file to the directory where Gemulator is located prior to running Gemulator for the first time, such that Gemulator can automatically detect EmuTOS and use it.

Games can be download from our Atari ST Games or several other places over the Internet. Usually, the floppy images use .st, .stx or .msa extensions. The games downloaded from VITNO will in ZIP format, containing all the floppy images needed to play the game or run the application. Other sites will have one ZIP file for every floppy image.

If you do not have a joystick, it is possible to use the keyboard to play the games. By default, Hatari will be configured to use an actual joystick, so if you want to use the keyboard you have to bring up the Configuration screen (F12) and press the Joysticks button. Just select Use Keyboard and press the button Define keys to select which keys will be used. The arrow keys and the right Ctrl are the defaults.

Specific hardware. EmuTOS expects certain hardware, for example a 680x0 or ColdFire processor. It runs on Atari ST hardware, some Amigas, and a variety of other machines that roughly emulate the Atari ST. It also runs on a number of emulators, such as Hatari and ARAnyM. Since this is a wide variety of hardware, we refer you to the documentation for that hardware.

These are the zip archive files available for download, where X.Y indicates the current release version. See below for how to use some of them. The source is also available from a git repository, which is beyond the scope of this document.

No-one at Atari anticipated that thirty years on people would still be hacking Atari computers, so they made little provision for upgrading their operating systems. But you can! Downloads are available at the EmuTOS download web site.

Almost all Atari STs came with TOS in read only memory (ROM). Only a few very early ones expected to boot the operating system from mass storage, meaning, in those days, floppy disk. EmuTOS is not specific to any particular version of Atari hardware, except for the ROM space available. You will have to select the size of the EmuTOS image to download and burn to ROM (or, more likely, EPROM). If you are using an emulator, see the emulator's documentation for installing a new ROM image.

Use tos-lang-change to change the display language and/or input keyboard layout in an EmuTOS ROM image for machines lacking NVRAM. This assumes that the ROM image supports multiple languages. Since the multi-language ROM images are too large for physical hardware, this mostly applies to the Hatari emulator.

Install the Emulator by unpacking the archive to a USB drive or SD card. The folder structure will be created and Hatari can then be launched directly with the Homebrew channel, or any other homebrew launcher. It also can be used as a plugin, and launched with command arguments through WiiFlow or Postloader (see Wiiflow plugin section). The emulator and folders can be copied on SD card, or USB drive. When the emulator starts, it looks for a configuration file (hatari.cfg) and a TOS file in the current directory. Here is the default directory structure :

The tos file is the operated system. By default, it should be named tos.img, and placed in /apps/hatari. The included Tos is a free version, and is called the Emutos. For better compatibility, use original TOS 1.02 or 1.04 for ST games, and TOS 1.62 or 2.06 for STE games. Tos 3.0x are for TT, and 4.0x are for falcon (untested in the Wii version). 2ff7e9595c
